Rescue Stick™ - Throwable Emergency Rescue Inflatable FAQ

What is the Rescue Stick™?
The Rescue Stick™ is a baton-shaped Rescue Flotation Device (RFD) that can be easily thrown. It automatically inflates within seconds of making water contact to provide rapid emergency flotation. It is not a substitute for a PFD.

How will the Rescue Stick™ make me more successful in rescue situations?
The Rescue Stick™ is highly versatile and can reduce the drowning risk to victims up to 150 feet away.  It can be deployed quickly and safely, providing an effective way to stabilize and float a person until secondary rescue efforts are deployed or until self-rescue is complete.

Which rescue scenarios will benefit most from the Rescue Stick™?
Conditions can change rapidly in a water rescue situation and there is no one device that covers all possible scenarios. The Rescue Stick™ provides the basics – float the victims first, then figure out how to retrieve them. It is ideal for first responders who may not be able to enter the water, in situations that provide a difficult path of rescue or where the victim is more than 50 feet away from the rescue team. The Rescue Stick™ allows you to provide assistance without putting yourself at risk. See our scenario suitability matrix and comparison review.

How far can you throw the Rescue Stick™?
On average, the Rescue Stick™ can be thrown 100 - 150 feet. The intuitive design of the Rescue Stick™ encourages first time users to deploy the device with little hesitation.  The Rescue Stick™ can be easily deployed by anyone who can throw a stick, including children.

How do I re-use the Rescue Stick™?
The Rescue Stick™ is designed for years of service. To re-use your Rescue Stick™ after inflation, you must purchase a re-arm kit and follow the self-guided inspection, re-arm and repack instructions in your manual. The procedure is relatively easy to complete.

Why does the Rescue Stick™ not have a rope?
A rope would significantly reduce both the distance it can be thrown and its high level of accuracy – two of its strongest features.  Entanglement on obstacles, debris and in a strong current is also avoided.

If retrieving victims within 50 feet in calm waters is an important part of your rescues, you can consider a rope bag as described in the comparison and scenario suitability chart.

Why isn't the Rescue Stick Coast Guard approved?
The Rescue Stick's innovative foam-free design means it can not be approved as a Type IV inherently buoyant (primarily foam) throwable flotation device. The Rescue Stick uses inflatable technology to provide almost twice the buoyancy of most throw cushions and ring buoys, and can be thrown up to three times as far to drastically outperform other throwable devices.

It is intended to be carried onboard a vessel, or in a vehicle, in addition to your approved Type IV device and PFDs.

* The Rescue Stick is intended to be carried onboard in addition to your approved Type IV device. Coast Guard approved Type IV throwable devices are a federal requirement for most vessels.

Who should get a Rescue Stick?

  • First responders such as fire & rescue, police and park rangers
  • Lifeguards
  • Commercial vessels
  • Marinas and port safety staff with high quai
  • Recreational boaters
